Judo in Russia got more popular because of Vladimir Putin who is honorory president of the International Judo Federation. Since Ezio Gamba became Manager of the Russian Judo Team, Russia celebrated 8 Olympic medals and 5 Olympic titles. Khasan Khalmurzaev and Beslan Mudranov became Olympic Champion in Rio where Natalia Kuziutina won bronze. In 2012 Arsen Galstyan, Mansur Isaev and Tagir Khaibulaev won judo gold in London. Russia is suspended by WADA for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo unless RUSADA will appeal.

Robert Mshvidobadze started his career in Georgia and won European Cadet medals. He started fighting for Russia in 2008 and took three silver medals at European U23 Championships. In 2017 he became European Senior champion in Warsaw. He won IJF World tour medals in Zagreb, Tokyo, Hohhot and Düsseldprf. He won the Grand Slam of Abu Dhabi in 2017. He took bronze at the Grand Prix in Budapest in 2018. In Baku he won World silver in 2018. Mshvidobadze won the World Masters in 2018 in Guangzhou.

He was also European Junior champion in 2017 in Maribor. He became European Cadet Champion U18 in 2015 and won a silver medal at the World Cadet Championships. With the Russian Junior Team he won bronze at Mixed Teams in 2017 in Zagreb. He took silver at the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf in 2019 and European Games silver in Minsk.
